Hip-hop artist Omid Wisdom is currently one of the promising rappers that is working hard to make it in the world music one day.
The promising star actually began feeling a sense of belonging as well as questioning his identity in what many would call ‘Generation X’, ‘The Hip Hop, Reggae Dancehall Generation’ at an early age. Born in the 80s and of Gambian descent, Omid Wisdom as fondly called began to develop a passion for writing and ‘rapping’, while at the same time going to high school. Since then, he has been working in all fronts to make a mark in the country’s developing music scene.
His arts of rhyming and the likes led to him being recognised as an above average emcee that delivered everytime the microphone was in his hand. Suunu ‘La Cosa Nostra: Sunu Allel’, a movement he is known to have affiliations with consisting of other emcees with multi-cultural individualities and a basic understanding of this Universal Language have a wide array of songs – singles, hits, mix tapes, albums and compilations on the streets of Africa to the outside world. He is featured on almost each and every one of those mixtapes, albums and compilations. ‘Fame in Africa, a liability and not no asset’, a notion many of the artists in this movement and this part of the world would ascertain somewhat true.
Like any other young man that had to grow up in what many might term as a dysfunctional environment, as if impaired in function like that of a bodily system, his humble beginnings always yearned that his growth wasn’t subject to his surroundings. Similar to what he would quote as the saying of one hood scholar, ‘This genesis, this humble beginning led to a revelation of all his pains.
Which he understands, he even felt, objurgated from the very essences of his past and present’. In contrast to other prolific artists that he has had the opportunity to vibe with from other movements like Daddy Bibson of the ‘Warriors Crew’, Senegal to Baba Israel of openthoughtmusic, just to name a few.’ “You want, to be in control of your music, often re-echoes ‘against’ the notion of fame and prominence. The quest for this balance has repeatedly surfaced throughout my journey, a journey between struggle and independence, hunger and control, communication and confrontation, therapy, the learning’s and the un-learning’s of his generation, better explained in his yet to be released solo effort, Chronicles 101: His mega project entitled ‘The Wisdom Of Testimonies- ‘The Cassette bu Jahaso’ Vol 1 coming out this July 30th 2011 at the Pickles bar and restaurant (Formerly known as Atlantic City) Opposite the S.O.S High School in Bakoteh.
This Wisdom of Testimonies started off as a conception which progressed into a weekly radio show at the Paradise FM’ radio station in Kololi. “People would call in from the provinces and from the global village at large expressing a sense of respect, belonging and appreciation at the 101′s the show would dwell upon. The giveaway information oriented CD’s ,DVD’s and the likes would reach not only the people in the Kombo’s of The Gambia but also the provinces, all without any major sponsor from any institution.
He is also featured on The 2005 Afrolution compilation alongside artist like Smoke Doctor, Hakim from the former ‘The Boys’ with artist like Pee Froiss, Omzo, Metaphysics, Wawesh, X plastaz just to name a few. A good number of people know him as the voice behind the 2011 ‘Shout Gambia’ narrative sold at every major ‘galp’ station in town, but on the lighter side of things, he is also an inspiring graffiti artist, beat boxer and producer fusing rich African culture with modern day music.
